About Us
How did we get here?
Zion Lutheran Church was first organized in March of 1890. Six families kept the church going until enough money was put together to build a small chapel at Fairview and Thomas. Construction started on the current building in1911. Services were conducted in English and Swedish until 1931.
By 1950 there were 950 members. The majority lived in and around the Midway neighborhood, but many who had a family history with the church continued to drive in from the suburbs to their “church home”.
In 1990 we celebrated 100 years as a congregation. We had many events throughout the year that brought former members back to renew old acquaintances. As part of the centennial celebration we published a cookbook containing favorite recipes of current and former members. It also has a detailed history of the congregation.
Who are we now?
We have a membership of about 200 adults and children. Worship attendance averages 60 and is growing, with visitors and friends of the congregation at each service. Worship focuses on God’s love for us, and our commitment to share that love with others. Sharing the “peace of the Lord” with each other is an important part of the service each Sunday. As we care for each other we are also aware of the needs of others outside our congregation. We are a member of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America (ELCA) and support other organizations so that they may continue to carry out their mission.
We are a small church with a big heart!
Who do we want to be?
We want to remain a community of Christian faith with a renewed commitment to welcome all into that faith and to reach out in service to the Midway neighborhood.
All persons are welcome to worship and participate in the life of this congregation. Sunday School is open to all neighborhood children. You do not have to have a Lutheran background to come to Zion. We want to share the love of God! If you have an idea how we can do that better, please tell us
