MaaSae Girls School

Update on Easter Mission Project
MaaSae Girls Lutheran Secondary School in Tanzania

Once again we have reached our goal.  Thank you for your generosity. Over $1000 was raised again this year so that we can continue to support the tuition of four students at the MaaSae Girls Lutheran School in Tanzania.

The school is located in Monduli, Tanzania and was founded in 1995. The name MaaSae comes partially from an acronym.  Maa is the language of the Maasai tribe…S is for Speakers; A for Advanced, and E for Education…MaaSae

Tanzania is one of the world’s poorest countries, and only about one in five young people are able to attend secondary school, and rarely are they women.

The targeted population of the school is Maasai young women whose parents are not interested in pursuing their daughters’ education. These young women can only attend school because of sponsors (like us at Zion) who share their resources in order to pay the girls’ tuition. The students are in Forms 1 through 4, which is equivalent to grades 8 to 11.

Deana Miller, director of Operation Bootstrap Africa, has sent an update on our students:

Elizabeth is 16 years old. Her tuition is being supported by our youth in the Breakfast Club. Elizabeth is from the Ruvu Remit area of Tanzania. She is in Form 2.

Marie is 22 years old. Women of the ELCA (WELCA) of Zion are supporting her tuition as she continues in her 2nd year at the Teacher’s College. Marie is from the Enguiki area of Tanzania.

Nemoshon is now in Form 4. We received word that Neomoshon was confirmed this last year. Her tuition is supported by donations from our congregation at large.

Nengai is 15 years old.  She is from the Gelai-Lumba area of Tanzania. She is in Form 3.

A picture of each of these young women is on our bulletin boards.

The students look forward to hearing from their sponsors. Writing/reading letters helps the girls learn English, and of course, these letters establish a personal relationship. We encourage any of our congregation to write to these students. Letters from these girls are collected in a notebook at the back of the sanctuary. Contact Pastor Phil if you are interested in sponsoring a student at 651-645-0851.
